Safe Sleep Rules to Protect Babies

• Babies sleep safer on their backs. Sleeping on the belly or the side is not safe for infants.

• Once infants are positioned to sleep on their backs, it's OK to let them sleep in whatever position they assume.

• Risk for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) drops after 4 months as per research findings by the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP).

• Use a firm crib mattress.  According to AAP, a firm sleep surface protects against SIDS and suffocation

• Don't put any object in the crib.  Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet and use a nightgown or pajamas to keep the baby warm.

• Sleep near your baby but don't have the baby sleep in your baby.  Babies should sleep in their cribs.

• Move the infant to a crib or flat surface if infant falls asleep in a sitting device.

• Breastfeeding lowers SIDS risks.  The AAP recommends breastfeeding exclusively for at least the first six months but any length of breastfeeding time is better than none at all.

• Use a pacifier.  According to AAP, studies have found that using a pacifier helps protect against SIDS even it the pacifier falls out of infant's mouth while sleeping.

• Avoid overheating your infant. It is recommended that infants be dressed in no more than one additional layer of clothing than you'd wear.

• Provide supervised "Tummy time". When infant is awake, place him or her on tummy daily. This position promotes healthy motor and muscle development.
